 Akhal Teke Horses
The Akhal-Teke is a thoroughbred horse from Turkmenistan, where they are also a national emblem. Noted for their speed and endurance, they easily adapt to severe climate conditions. They are also thought to be one of the oldest surviving breeds of horses. Currently there are about 3,500 thoroughbred Akhal-Tekes in the world. These horses typically stand between 14.3 and 16.3 hands, with their most notable and defining trait being the natural metallic bloom of their coats. This color pattern is believed to have been used for camouflage in the desert. Tough and resilient, the Akhal-Tekes are good horses for sport, and known for their form and grace as show jumpers.
